On the rope-length of a knot

Abstract:
The basic question is the following: Given a rope of thickness r, how long does the rope have to be to tie a particular knot. The length of the rope is expressed in terms of r and the crossing number of the knot. Here the crossing number is the smallest number of crossing needed to draw the knot and serves as a basic measure of knot complexity. The talk is intended to give an overview of the last two decades of research on this question.
